Siemens M65 is a tri-band cameraphone, which makes it a suitable handset for the global roaming of most parts of the world. This is a candy bar styled mobile phone that comes in the colour finish called ?cool grey?, and it is designed to appeal to the outdoor type of person, as can be seen from Siemens advertisements that prominently show a mountain biker. Therefore, a significant selling point for this phone is that it was designed to withstand some rough treatment such as shock, dust and water splashes. The model is helped in this task by its rugged design of case, with a rubber bumper and full metal frame being incorporated into the body, which makes this phone robust enough for outdoor use or in a sporting situation. Indeed, there is an optional accessory called a Bike-o-Meter, a cradle that allows you to fit the phone to a bicycle, and you can then use the phone as a cyclometer computer for calculating information about your bike ride.

The M65 has a good range of other features built it, including GPRS and WAP technology, MMS multimedia messaging, video recording download and playback, a speakerphone for hands-free conversations, Java? enabled, digital voice memo recorder, full e-mail client, and an aircraft mode (so you can use games and organiser features while switching off the phone?s transmitter and receiver).

The display is a TFT type of active matrix LCD screen that can offer a resolution of 132 x 176 pixels, and it also has the capability to reproduce up to 65,536 different colours. This high-definition screen provides a good display for viewing the phone?s icon-based menu system, as well as a way to check on the results of pictures and video clips that you take with the phone?s camera. Furthermore, being MMS enabled, the M65 can exchange multimedia messages with other MMS compatible phones, or you might prefer to send your multimedia messages to an e-mail address. The MMS messages you create with this phone may contain a combination of texts, pictures/video, and sounds. The phone?s ability to reproduce video means that you can also download video clips to the phone, and play them back with supporting sound.

The M65 has an integrated VGA quality camera, with the lens fitted on the phone?s back cover. There is a choice of 4 picture qualities that you can use with the camera: VGA (640 x 480 pixels), QVGA (320 x 240 pixels), QQVGA (160 x 120 pixels), and a wallpaper size (132 x 176 pixels). The same camera is used for taking both still pictures and video, and some of its other features include a 5x digital zoom control, the means to adjust the exposure settings (depending on ambient lighting conditions), and a timer to assist with the taking of self-portraits. To help with indoor shots and night photography, an IFL-600 flashgun with a redeye setting is available as an optional accessory, and this can be plugged into the phone when needed.

As with almost all phones nowadays the Siemens M65 may be personalised with new content, such as different ringtones, wallpapers, screensavers, animations, pictures, logos, and ?themes? (complete visual presentations for your phone). New content can be downloaded from the Siemens portals, or from your service provider, when you want to change the phone?s sound and appearance. One useful feature is that sounds and voices recorded with the phone?s digital memo recorder can also be used as your personal ringtones. Likewise, the pictures taken with the integrated camera may then be used as wallpapers, or as images for your picture phonebook, to show who is calling. Another fun aspect to this phone is the set of LED lights fitted along its sides, and these can be set to flash and warn you when certain events or functions are occurring.

One useful feature, that lets you expand the M65?s range of options, is its Java? capability, which means that it can run a large number of different games and application programs. Three games (?Armageddon Agents?, ?Stack Attack Advanced? and ?Turrican?) and several applications are provided to get you going, but the great benefit of the onboard Java capability is that, when you want to try some new game or run an application you need for work or pleasure, then you simply search through the catalogues and download what you want to use.

Another important asset in the phone is its integrated GPRS technology, which not only provides you with fast access to all the network services, but it has the side-effect that you get an ?always on? connection, where you only pay for the actual data you use rather than the length of time that you are connected. The WAP 2.0 browser is another essential feature that allows you to access the mobile Internet, and to make use of the many WAP sites now on offer. With this WAP tool you will be able to find all the services you might need from your mobile phone, including news, traffic, weather, entertainments, sports, business, as well as online shopping and banking. The phone comes with a full e-mail client, which supports the standard POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols, so you do not have to lose touch with your normal e-mail facilities while you are travelling about.

Connectivity is either by a wireless link, making use of the phone?s infrared port to connect with other compatible IrDA devices, or alternatively you can use a wired link to a USB or RS232 data cable connection. Once a connection has been established it is then possible to transfer data and files between the two devices, and to synchronise your address book, calendar, etc; you may, for example, choose to synchronise this phone with your home or office PC. To assist with synchronisation, the M65 supports Microsoft Outlook? and also remote synchronisation via SyncML. The Mobile Phone Manager software, a Microsoft Windows? program, can be downloaded from www.siemens-mobile.com/m65, and this software enables you to get the best out of your PC?s connection to your phone.

The M65 also has several of the standard organiser and other useful functions that almost all phones are now provided with. In this case you get an address book, calendar (reminder list), notes (for brief text memos), alarms, calculator, unit and currency converter, world clock, stopwatch, and countdown timer. This phone also supports the exchange of vCard business cards, and contains the standard phone features of vibration alert and T9? predictive text input.
