Siemens CX65 is a tri-band cameraphone, and it is a candy bar design suitable for global roaming and the needs of the business user. The handset comes in a stylish silver and grey finish, which Siemens call ?cool silver?, and like other phones from Siemens (and other manufacturers) the keys are not laid out simply in neat rows for good functionality, but they are shaped to match the styling - although this is not so much of a problem here, unusual key layouts are something that buyers need to consider when choosing a mobile phone.
Despite the lack of Bluetooth? the phone is well equipped with other features, including its integrated GPRS and WAP technology, MMS multimedia messaging, video recording and playback, speakerphone for hands-free conversation, Java? enabled for games and applications, digital sound recorder, and full e-mail client. Although there is no memory card slot, the phone does have an impressive 11 MB of internal memory, enough to store 164 minutes of voice memos or 180 pictures at the maximum resolution quality. A large TFT type of active matrix LCD display is fitted in the phone, and this offers the user a high definition resolution of 132 x 176 pixels, with the possibility of reproducing up to 65,536 different colours.
The integrated camera in the CX65 fulfils the dual roles of being a stills as well as a video camera. A choice of four picture qualities is available for still shots although, as the camera is a VGA device, the maximum resolution is limited to 640 x 480 pixels. There is also a good 5x digital zoom facility, adjustable exposure and white balance controls, and a timer to help with the taking of self-portraits. This phone does not have a built-in flash to support the camera (although the LED flashlight in most phones tends to be fairly ineffective), and so it is probably a good thing that Siemens offer the optional plug-in IFL-600 - a proper strobe flash with integrated sensor to check flash level - at least it will work more like a normal camera flashgun.
As the Siemens CX65 is also capable of recording and playing back video clips, it should be remembered that video will quickly eat up memory, and is more demanding on the phone?s memory capacity than most other functions. Therefore, video shooting is limited to a clip length of 15 seconds, and the resolution is also no better than 128 x 96 pixels. However, as big video clips and megapixel stills cannot be sent by MMS, this should not unduly upset those who want to send their video clips to friends. Being MMS enabled, you can use this phone to create, send and receive a message containing a combination of a video clip/picture, a sound clip and a text. It is also possible to include in the MMS the video/pictures taken with the phone?s camera, and the sounds recorded with its sound recorder.
Rather than having the 5-way navigation keypad system, that now seems fairly common on many recent phones, this model has a small joystick control. The joystick provides the means to do the usual 4-way scrolling, and when you wish to start a selected function or application, all you need to do is to press the joystick inwards.
Personalisation of the Siemens CX65 is possible, and when you want to change the look and sound of your phone you can download new wallpapers, screensavers, pictures, logos, animations, colour schemes (skins), and ringtones. Further customisation is possible by swapping the changeable covers and keypad mats with others in the Siemens? CLIPit? range, and this means you are able to add a more colourful or different appearance to the phone.
A significant advantage in a mobile phone is to have the capability to change the software you use, and the CX65 has the benefit of being Java? enabled. Operating on a Java platform means that this phone will run a variety of Java applications and games, and there are several applications and 2 games preloaded. When you wish to use new software, it is a simple affair to download new programs over-the-air from your network provider or the Siemens portal.
Another important feature within this phone is its integrated GPRS data transfer technology, which gives you that ?always on? connection, and the result that you pay for the amount of data you actually use, rather than the time you are connected to the network. The built-in WAP technology and browser will also provide you with fast access to the mobile Internet, and this means you can use any of the WAP services and information sites currently available to mobile phone users. You may, for example, access services such as live news updates, sports results, weather forecasts, travel information, details of films and music entertainment, as well as stock market and business news. The onboard e-mail client is another tool for business or personal use, and this enables you to send your videos clips and pictures to friends as attachments; the standard e-mail protocols of POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP are also supported.
There is a choice of connectivity options in the Siemens CX65. The phone has an infrared port to link up wirelessly with any compatible PC or PDA, or there is the wired alternative of using a USB or RS232 data cable, which can be purchased as optional extras. Whatever connection method you use, once linked you can then exchange files and data, and you might wish to transfer your pictures to your home PC, for example. The other useful task that can be performed is to synchronise your schedule and phonebook entries, and this phone supports Microsoft Outlook?, as well as remote synchronisation using SyncML.
