Siemens S65 is a tri-band candy bar style cameraphone, which makes it a suitable handset for global roaming. Siemens have aimed this mobile phone at the business user by including a range of business features and applications, and its stylish conservative appearance (in black and steel) would not look out of place in an office environment. This model is also the first mobile on the market to feature the advanced Bluetooth? 1.2 connectivity technology.
The S65 is a handset that offers all of the features you might expect in the most up-to-date mobile phone. Among the features that will attract buyers are its Bluetooth? wireless technology (mentioned above), GPRS and WAP data handling, MMS multimedia messaging, video recording download and playback, a memory card slot, voice memo recorder, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, Java? enabled, and an e-mail client. There is also an aircraft mode to make the phone safe for use on flights.
The display is a large TFT active matrix type of LCD, which has a resolution of 132 x 176 pixels and can reproduce up to 65,536 different colours. This screen is also capable of displaying 9 lines of text. A large screen makes it easier to view details when browsing the WAP sites, and it also helps when examining the photographs taken with the phone?s camera. With its MMS capability, the large screen on the S65 will help the user to create multimedia messages, which may contain a combination of text, picture, audio and video, and you can then exchange these MMS messages with other compatible phones.
A main feature of the S65 is its integrated camera, which with its resolution of 1.3 megapixels is currently one of the best cameras available in a mobile phone. The camera lens is located on the rear cover of the phone. A selection of 4 resolutions is provided for taking still pictures, up to the maximum of 1,280 x 960 pixels, and when you need to enlarge the picture it is possible to use up to 5x digital zoom. If photography in poor light conditions is required, then there is an optional plug-in flashgun available as an accessory, the IFL-600, with an anti red-eye setting. Some exposure adjustment is provided in the phone to get the light balance right, and there is also a choice of setting one of three different colour modes (normal, sepia, grey tones). A Photo Editor is included, to enable you to modify the photographs taken with the camera and to achieve the results you want. Portraits taken of your friends and contacts may be transferred into the picture phonebook, to help you identify your callers from their photo ID.
The camcorder function allows the user to record video with sound, and this can be recorded at one of two resolution standards, the best quality being QCIF (176 x 144 pixels). The phone?s video operation supports the 3GPP (H.263) format and it can run at 15 fps. Video clips can also be downloaded to the phone, and this might prove valuable if you need to view some news action, sports or entertainment highlights, etc. Note that this phone does not support MP3 audio, and so it cannot play music tracks.
As the user of the Siemens S65 is likely to need a lot of memory for storing business information, about 10 MB of memory has been allocated to the user. As this may prove to be insufficient for those who wish to take lots of pictures and sound recordings, expandable memory is also provided for in the S65, by means of a Reduced Size MultiMedia Card? slot (a 32 MB card is supplied with the phone). The memory cards can easily be exchanged, when they are full, by opening the little cover at the end of the phone and inserting a new one. You can use these memory cards to save pictures, videos and sounds, as well as personal data, applications and games. One point, which might be helpful to the user, is that this phone will also accept normal sized MMC cards, even though the end of the card will protrude from the slot.
For those who like to personalise their phones, this model is also capable of being customised by changing the wallpapers, screensavers or ringtones, and complete themes are supplied. If you want to alter the sound and appearance of your phone still further, then more new content can be quickly and easily downloaded from the Siemens portal, or from your service provider. A Download Assistant is supplied, to make the downloading process to the phone as easy as possible. Alternatively, you may prefer to use one of your own photographs as personal wallpaper.
Being Java? enabled means that this phone can run a wide range of applications, including those specifically designed for business use. However, there is also the possibility to play games on the phone, for some entertaining distraction, and three games come preloaded: Worms, 3D Rally and Sea Battle. A CD-ROM is supplied, which contains the Mobile Phone Manager software, and this enables you to handle several operations, such as managing pictures, sounds and files with the phone, and the CD also includes synchronising software for your PC. Other applications available are a Cocktail Manager, to show you how to mix cocktail drinks, and a Survival Dictionary to help the traveller with phrases in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.
As the S65 has integrated GPRS technology, this enables a faster data transfer to make life easier when data is being sent to and from the network. GPRS also means that you get the benefit of an ?always on? connection, where you pay for the amount of data you actually use, rather than for the length of time you are connected to the network. With its WAP browser this phone provides a good access to the mobile Internet, and a large number of sites and services are now available there, including all the business, news and entertainment that you might need while travelling around. An e-mail client is included, which supports the standard protocols of POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP, and this also supports the sending of attachments.
The S65 offers the user a good choice of connectivity options. You can link up wirelessly by using a Bluetooth? radio link to exchange data with other compatible Bluetooth devices, at up to a 10-metre range, or alternatively there is the other choice to use the phone?s infrared port to connect with IrDA compatible devices. In addition, the standard wired option is provided, and this means a USB data cable can be used to connect the phone directly to the other device. When you have connected to another phone, PC or PDA, you are then able to exchange files and data between the devices. You might choose, for example, to synchronise your personal information in the phone?s address book or phonebook with that on your home PC, and you are assisted in this by the phone?s support for the programs Microsoft Outlook? and Lotus Notes?. Remote synchronisation is also supported, and it is possible to synchronise the mobile with an organiser stored on the Internet, by using SyncML. Another useful facility is the phone?s support of the international standards for the exchange of vCard business cards.
As you might expect, the S65 also has good organiser features, including an address book, phonebook, calendar, tasks, notes, world clock, alarm, stopwatch, countdown timer, calculator, and unit converter (including currency). The phone includes the T9? software for predictive text input, and it has a silent vibration alert when you don?t want to disrupt your business meetings.
