Nokia N-Gage QD is a dual band mobile phone in a curved candy bar style body, although it is mainly designed to look like a games deck and to be used in a landscape orientation when game playing. The rubberised outer casing also gives the impression that it can take a few knocks without being damaged. This is a modified version of the earlier N-Gage model, and whereas its predecessor was a tri-band phone, the new N-Gage QD is designed to work as a dual band model, and so will not be as versatile for roaming.
With the inclusion of several advanced features the N-Gage QD can offer smartphone capability, in addition to its obvious gaming possibilities. Among the phone?s many features are Bluetooth? wireless connectivity, GPRS and HSCSD data handling capability, WAP and xHTML browser, MMS multimedia messaging, a video player, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, MultiMediaCard? (MMC) memory card expansion slot, voice control, enabled for Java? and Symbian software operating platforms, voice memo recorder, and a full e-mail client.
When compared to its predecessor, the Nokia N-Gage QD is also slightly smaller in size and slightly heavier, although the apparent design weaknesses of the original have now been eliminated. One particular problem of the earlier model was that, when you wanted to use new games, you had to change the MMC card by removing the battery, which was quite disruptive. After the design modifications, the N-Gage QD now has a MMC memory card slot on the bottom so that cards can be changed easily and quickly, with the added benefit that they are ?hot-swappable?, meaning that you can exchange cards without switching off the handset. Games will start automatically when the MMC card is inserted.
The phone?s speaker is also in a better position than on the original N-Gage, and this modification makes it more convenient to hold the handset when using it to make normal voice phone calls. However, there are a couple of features that were in the previous model but are missing from this one - the MP3 player and the FM radio - and this might be an issue for those who want a music machine as well as a games deck. Nevertheless, it is intended that the N-Gage and Nokia N-Gage QD will continue to be sold alongside each other, and so the different selection of features will offer potential buyers a choice depending on what it is they are looking for.
The display on this phone is a LCD screen with a high resolution of 176 x 208 pixels, and this display can reproduce up to 4096 different colours. There is no built-in camera with the Nokia N-Gage QD, but you are still able to send and receive pictures that you obtain from several available sources, such as a Web page or from devices such as PCs and other mobile phones. You can also use images saved from a screen shot, or those sent to you in multimedia and picture messages, as well as those sent as e-mail attachments or via a Bluetooth? connection. Another useful feature is the phone?s integrated video player, which enables you to play video clips stored in the phone?s memory or from a memory card. With its MMS capability you can send and receive messages containing a combination of video clip, picture, animation, sound and text.
Clearly, the Nokia N-Gage QD (QD stands for "Quaque Die" - Latin for Every Day) is aimed at the buyer who wants a phone that doubles up as a games deck, rather than a phone that can play music (hence the absence of the MP3 player and FM radio), and Nokia state that you can enjoy up to10 hours of gaming from the battery. The phone can handle games that have the added realism of 3D graphics, and these are available on MMCs or are downloadable. There is also the option to engage in games with multi-player participation online via Nokia?s N-Gage Arena (the N-Gage Arena launcher software comes pre-installed), or you can use the phone?s Bluetooth? connection to challenge other players. Among the various applications supplied with the phone is a Game Manager, which enables you to organise your games, and to back up the games data that you create. An important point, for those who already have a library of stored games, is that the games for the old N-Gage will still work on the N-Gage QD. There is also a ?flight mode?, which permits you to use the gaming facilities on an aeroplane, while it ensures that phone?s radio section is disabled.
The phone has a good internal memory capacity of 3.4 MB, although this would not be adequate to store many games, which means it is an essential feature that the available memory can be easily expanded by using MultiMediaCard? memory cards, and MMC cards of up to 256 MB capacity are supported. Each game you buy is stored on a read-only MMC game card, and so any game specific data you generate, such as high scores, are stored on the game deck?s internal memory, and not on the N-Gage game card. You can use MMC cards to store downloaded games and applications as well as other personal data.
Being Java? enabled, the phone is capable of running a wide range of Java applications and games. Some Java programs are supplied with the phone, but it is a simple matter to download more games and applications when you want to use something new. The Symbian Series 60 Operating System is also included, which gives you a Windows-like operating environment and the benefits of a graphical user interface and application multitasking.
As you would expect with a phone like this, you also have the possibility to personalise the look and sound of the Nokia N-Gage QD by switching between the available wallpapers, logos, screensavers, ringtones and keypad tones. When you wish to find some new content, for the purpose of customising your phone, then you can simply download the pictures, animations and sounds that you like from among the sources open to you. There is also an onboard ringtone composer provided for those who wish to create their own unique ringtones (monophonic only).
With its integrated GPRS and HSCSD data handling technology this phone provides you with fast access to all the network services, and you also gain the ?always on? connection that is a characteristic of this technology, and which means you pay for the data you actually use rather than the time you are connected. The additional facility of WAP and an xHTML browser, built into this phone, will allow you to access and surf the mobile Internet for the services and information that you need. There are many WAP sites now operating to offer a wide range of news, weather, travel, sports, entertainment, business and other services or information for the benefit of the mobile phone user. An additional feature, that will appeal to many users, is that this phone has a full e-mail client onboard, and the standard protocols of POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP are supported, as are also MIME2 attachments.
A major feature of the N-Gage QD is that it has Bluetooth? wireless connectivity, which enables you to link up by radio with any other Bluetooth phone or device within a 10-metre range. You can use the Bluetooth connection to exchange files and information and to carry out synchronisation of your personal data with a PC or PDA, for example. This phone also supports remote synchronisation using SyncML.
