Nokia 7260 is a tri-band cameraphone, and as such is suitable for global roaming. This is a candy bar model aimed at the fashion conscious user, and the appearance of the case is highly distinctive with its art deco styling. But looks are not everything and this phone also comes armed with many other desirable features, including EDGE GPRS and HSCSD data technology, a WAP 2.0 and XHTML browser, MMS multimedia messaging, video record download and playback, FM stereo radio, voice memo recorder, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, Java? enabled, voice control, and an e-mail client.

This mobile phone has a TFT type of active matrix LCD, which can display a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels, and this screen can also reproduce up to 65,536 different colours. Although this is not a particularly large display when compared to some other recent phones, it is adequate for its purpose, and can be used to view the photographs and video clips taken by the camera; the display also acts as a game-playing screen, and it allows you to choose your options from the menus. One useful menu feature is the ?go to? system, which lets you rearrange the phone?s functions into a personal shortcut list, and so you may quickly select your favourite functions.

The Nokia 7260 has an integrated VGA quality camera (640 x 480 pixels), with the camera lens being fitted in the usual place on the back cover of the phone. Three picture qualities of high, normal or basic are available, depending on how much the picture file will be compressed when saved - this means that ?high? quality photos will give the best image, but they also occupy the most memory space. Pictures may be edited if you wish, and it is possible to crop the image to a smaller size, or insert text, a frame or clip-art. Other camera features are the provision of a night mode setting, to help with the taking of photographs in poor light conditions, and there is a timer to use when taking self-portraits.

Another useful feature (to enhance your messages, maybe?) is the ability of this mobile phone to capture video, and it is possible to record video clips up to a maximum length of approximately 50 seconds. Alternatively, you might be attracted by this phone?s capability to download video clips over-the-air, such as entertainment or sports highlights, and these can then be played back on the phone. The 7260 supports video at the two resolutions of QCIF and SubQCIF, and these clips may be accompanied by an audio soundtrack (AMR file), if you so wish.

One of the important features of the 7260 is its MMS capability, which allows users to send and receive multimedia messages that contain a combination of text, a picture, a sound clip, and a video clip. The phone supports MMS messages of up to a maximum of 100 kB in size. For those who prefer to send text messages, another option offered by this phone is instant messaging, which makes it possible to take part in two-way texting sessions with your friends and contacts. The phone also supports the sending and receiving of flash messages of up to 70 characters (a flash message is a text message that is displayed instantly).

For a little music or entertainment the Nokia 7260 has an integrated FM radio, which makes it possible to enjoy listening to your favourite radio channels while on the move. The tuning of the radio can be performed either manually or by an automatic channel search. Up to 20 radio channels may be selected and stored as presets in the phone, so that it is quick and easy changing from one channel to another. In order to get the best reception from the radio a headset needs to be connected, as the headset lead serves as the radio?s antenna. The radio may be listened to in private via the headset, or alternatively you can play the station through the phone?s internal loudspeaker, and share your listening with those around you.

Those who like to personalise their phones will have no problems with the 7260. You can change the themes on the phone when you want to - themes can include a screen saver, a wallpaper image, a ringtone, and a colour scheme to customise the phone for different events and environments. More themes, and also individual wallpapers, screensavers and ringtones may be downloaded over-the-air when you need them.

A photograph taken with the camera may be used as your personal wallpaper, or it can be attached as a thumbnail picture to a contact, and displayed when they call you. You can also set up caller groups, each with their own ringtones and image to help make it easier to identify the caller?s ID. The phone has a selection of polyphonic (MIDI) ringtones that can play up to 16 instruments at the same time, and these ringtones may use sound components from over 128 instruments. There are 6 profiles available in the phone, including two that are user customisable.

Being Java? enabled means that the 7260 can run a range of Java applications and games. Some applications are preinstalled ready for the user, and two games (Glamour Pinball and Backgammon) are also preloaded for you to play. However, it is an easy matter to download more Java games and applications when you need to use new programs.

With its GPRS, HSCSD and EDGE data capabilities this mobile phone gives fast access to the network and good data transfer speeds. The additional benefits of the phone?s data handling technology are that the user gets an ?always on? connection, and you only pay for the actual amount of data transferred rather than the time you are connected to the network. Apart from WAP 2.0, the 7260?s browser also handles XHTML, to give better quality graphical content from Web pages. The phone offers good access to the mobile Internet, and is capable of providing you with the opportunity to enjoy all the services and information sources that are now available to mobile phone users, such as news reports, sports, traffic information, weather forecasts, entertainments, business, shopping, and other online services. Another important feature is the E-mail client, which provides users with access to their normal e-mail services on the phone, and this client supports the standard POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols. A further business benefit is that the phone can handle the exchange of business cards.

There are several connectivity options offered by the Nokia 7260. Wireless connections can be set up using the phone?s infrared port, and this allows you to transfer information to and from other IrDA compatible devices. For the wired option, a data cable can be connected to the phone?s Pop-Port?, and information can then be transferred to equipment that supports such cable connections. Once a suitable connection has been established, you may then use the phone to transfer personal information, or pictures and sounds, and to carry out synchronisation of the data in your phone book or calendar, for example. A further possibility is to perform a remote synchronisation over the network using the phone?s support for SyncML.

The 7260 provides the usual organiser features, including a calendar, notes, to do list, world clock, alarms, countdown timer, stopwatch, calculator, currency converter, and wallet. Among the useful applications provided there is one that enables you to convert clothing and shoe sizes. This phone also features presence-enhanced contacts, which means that you can share information about your status and availability with the callers and contacts that need to know where you are, or when they can contact you. This presence service also allows you to find out about the availability of a selected list of your contacts. The phone includes the other usual features of T9? predictive text input and vibration alert.
